Geographic location, time of year, and time of day all significantly affect the quality of light we receive. In relation to the time of day, morning light is bluer and cooler (often called „blue light“), while evening light is warmer and associated with „red light.“ Our bodies also have non-visual biological mechanisms that respond to light: in blue light, we are more awake and reactive, and in red light, we become sleepy due to the release of melatonin.

To stay healthy and keep our biological clock in a good sleep/wake routine, it's helpful to have more exposure to "blue" light during the day and less in the evening. This is more difficult in the winter, and some people can also develop seasonal affective disorder (SAD) when natural light is limited.

Functional aspect

Natural light cannot be completely controlled, but the daylight that does enter a building can be used wisely. As much natural light as possible should be allowed to enter, as this reduces the need for artificial lighting. In certain situations, glare can be distracting and unpleasant, and can make it difficult to read computer screens and whiteboards. Shadows, on the other hand, can create confusion and be interpreted as a change in floor level. When glare is a problem, it is better to use blinds/curtains or plants to filter the light, rather than blocking it out completely.

Artificial lighting is used when there is not enough daylight, most often at night and especially in the winter. It is flexible and offers a wide range of solutions. Ambient lighting provides an even distribution of light over a larger area, task lighting is used for specific activities such as reading or drawing, and accent lighting serves to highlight certain elements, such as paintings or works of art.

Light has a huge impact on our ability to perform a task and our overall sense of well-being. Insufficient lighting can have negative consequences, such as an increased risk of falls in dimly lit conditions or a higher likelihood of migraines.

Emotional aspect

Lighting can be used to influence a wide range of emotions, depending on its intensity. A low level of light with a warm glow creates a pleasant, "cosy" atmosphere and relaxes us. On the other hand, strong and intense light has a stimulating effect and gives us a feeling of energy.

Additionally, it is very important how light affects the perception of color. The same shade of color can look completely different in daylight compared to artificial lighting. To make sure you are making the right choice, we always recommend using a sample and testing it in different lighting conditions.

[1

post-1459","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
